Judges' Comments

"She has excellent story ideas, chooses dramatic anecdotes and uses quotes to propel the stories instead of to repeat information."

Facing the Demons: Jeanne Boylan Draws Eerie Likenesses of Nation's Most Horrific Criminals

In "Facing the demons," Cumpston expertly profiled a world-class criminal image profiler, Colorado native Jeanne Boylan.

In "Grammy dude," Cumpston introduced readers to the local resident who actually makes the Grammy Awards.

And in "Volunteer heroes," Cumpston wrote about an integral part of the security and safety of rural communities, their volunteer fire departments.

Cumpston is a native of Colorado. After spending nearly a decade as a broadcast journalist at television stations in Missoula, Mont., Bismarck, N.D., and Phoenix, Ariz., she turned her talents to print when she joined the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel in 1997.

At the Daily Sentinel, she worked as a humor columnist, entertainment and feature writer.

She received recognition from the Colorado AP; Colorado Press Association; IRS Criminal Investigation Denver field office; North Dakota AP Broadcasters; and the Society of Professional Journalists.

Cumpston recently left the newspaper to pursue a freelance writing career.
