Damon Higgins walked into the Palm Beach Post eight months
ago as a raw rookie. His only experience: two internships
with a short part-time stint in Cox newsrooms.
After his final internship with the Post and five months
as a full-time employee here, Higgins has proven to be an
up-and-coming talent.
During an internship at the Dayton Daily News, Higgins was
assigned to cover riots in Cincinnati. He came back with an
impressive series of photos that helped complete Daytons
spot news coverage.
However, a riot isnt required for Higgins to make
great pictures. His snot of a teacup poodle in a handbag reflects
the wry wit of a born photographer who has a keen eye.
While assigned to a stock car race, Higgins shot a picture
story for the Palm Beach Post that included a very creative
idea of his -- a multiple exposure photo of a pit crew appearing
to hover around a race car like a swarm of bees.
A Dayton native, Higgins graduated from Oberlin College
with a degree in economics and received a masters in
public policy from the University of Chicago.
He served as an assistant program officer for the Charles
F. Kettering Foundation in Dayton and as a senior researcher
for John Doble Research Associates, Inc. in Englewood Cliffs,
N.J. In 1999, he decided to switch professions and pursue
a career in photojournalism.
He joined the Palm Beach Post as a staff photographer in
the fall of 2001.
Higgins is currently working on his masters degree
in visual communications from Ohio University.
