Greg
Lovett
PHOTOGRAPHER
OF THE YEAR
Palm Beach Post
Greg Lovett
has been the bookends for an era of good photography in Cox Newspapers
during the last decade. He was Photographer of the Year in 1990
and now wears that mantle again in 2001.
A discerning
panel of judges also named him the best this year in Features and
Sports. Lovett's three first places in 2001 are his eighth, ninth
and tenth in assorted aspects of the Best of Cox since its inception.
In addition,
the high standards for news photography at the Palm Beach Post are
reflected in its winning of the Cox Photographer of the Year prize
in 10 of the 13 years of the competition.
"I work with
a bunch of super talented and creative people," Lovett said. "Our
photographic staff continually raises the bar. That makes me a better
photographer.
"The next key
is management that trusts me and gives me time to develop a story
so that I can establish that intimacy that is required to make good
photographs.
"Then it's the
picture editors who pull it all together and the designers and writers
that make it all work. No one can accomplish great things at a newspaper
alone."
Pete Cross is
the photo editor who has guided Lovett's career.
"Everything
Greg does, he usually comes back with something extra," Cross said.
"He is one of the hardest working photographers I've ever met.
"I think he
feels he's not as good as some of the best, and he has to work harder
than the rest. He always puts a lot of thought into what he does."
The year 2000
was an important one for the Western Kentucky University graduate
and 1993 Pulitzer finalist. He won second place in the 2000 Photographer
of the Year competition for 11 Southern states. And perhaps most
importantly, his wife, reporter Sonja Lovett, gave birth to a son,
Riley.
"He has really
opened my eyes to the real world," Lovett said. "His birth has really
filled my heart with so much love. Sonja is the best wife a man
could ever have. She has been incredibly supportive. My family makes
me a complete person."
