Sports Column
Gary Nuhn / Dayton Daily News

Gary Nuhn often swims against the tide in his Daily News sports column, and was doing so when he wrote about what he called "The Executioner."

"The Executioner is a 27-year-old piece of legislation called Title IX that was meant to guarantee equal opportunity for females," he wrote.

"Across the country, men's wrestling, swimming, golf, tennis, hockey and gymnastics programs have been massacred in the name of Title IX."

"Gary Nuhn tells it like it is," said Dwayne Bray, sports editor of the Daily News.

"Dayton readers like him that way. He doesn't beat around the bush, doesn't sugarcoat his opinions. He gets more reaction than any other writer we have."

A Geneva, N.Y., native, Nuhn later moved to Ohio and graduated from Ohio State with a degree in journalism. He was the Daily News' golf and University of Dayton basketball writer before being named a sports columnist in 1987.

Nuhn has two children, Nicole and Mikal.

His frank column-writing style strikes a chord with Daily News readers.

"I can't say how many people out in the community will say to me, 'I envy the fact that you're able to get off your chest everything you need to,' " Nuhn said.

"Most people just sit in their houses and see something they don't like and don't know how to do anything about it."

EXCERPT:
"As with most government mandates, Title IX began as a fine idea. Equalize opportunity, Congress told the nation's universities. Who could argue with that? Equal opportunity, motherhood, the flag, apple pie.

"But as with most if not all government mandates, Title IX went horribly amok."

JUDGES' COMMENTS:
"With clear, forceful writing, he almost forces a response from the reader, good or bad."
