Headline Writing
Mike Burke / Palm Beach Post

Good wordsmiths like Mike Burke know that to stay fresh they need to read a great deal — and not just what they see on their Macintosh computer screens at work.

"I do a lot of reading, including many chores I passed up in college," Burke said.

"A fair amount of it is heavy reading. I like Joseph Conrad, early Ernest Hemingway, and Somerset Maugham."

Burke is a copy editor for the Post's Accent section, and his winning headlines were about subjects as diverse as "body adornment," fashion and television sitcoms.

The Springfield, Mass., native graduated from College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass.

He was a reporter for the Nashville, Tenn., Banner; a reporter for the Transcript of North Adams, Mass.; and a copy editor, special projects reporter and editorial page editor for the Hollywood, Fla., Sun-Tattler.

He joined the Palm Beach Post in 1990.

He and his wife, Deborah, have two daughters, Kerry and Kate.

JUDGES' COMMENTS:
"These headlines make you stop and read. They are clever, but sophisticated, drawing the reader into the story."
