Editorial Writing
Tom Blackburn / Palm Beach Post

Tom Blackburn's editorials score direct hits on their targets for readers of the Palm Beach Post.

Three editorials entered in the Best of Cox competition "show the range of Tom's work, expressing public outrage, consumer anger and believers' faith," said Randy Schultz, editor of the editorial page.

"Tom speaks to the readers, not down to them."

Poor airline service was the subject of one of Blackburn's strongest editorials.

"I think airlines have more to do with the rise of cell phones than anything else, because the airport is the one place where you always need to call someone to tell them you're not going to be where you're supposed to be in time," Blackburn said.

A native of Evanston, Ill., he graduated from Marquette University. Before joining the Palm Beach Post, he was an associate editor of the National Catholic Reporter; editorial page editor of the Trenton, N.J., Times; and an editorial writer for the Miami News.

Blackburn is a former columnist for the National Catholic Reporter and the author of the book, "Christian Business Ethics."

He and his wife, Marilyn, have five grown children. Their names are Lise, Christopher, Monica, Michael and Stephen.

EXCERPT:
"Rep. Andrews has gone on the radio to say his new business isn't illegal. He wouldn't need to say that if his intentions were honorable.

"They aren't. Indeed, they amount to self-dealing."

JUDGES' COMMENTS:
"Stylishly written and elegantly argued."
