Sports Writing Non-Deadline
John Werner / Waco Tribune-Herald

For his feature on Paul Tyson, John Werner did much of the research at the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco, which has a room dedicated to the former coach.

"There were several men still living here who played for Tyson in the 1920s and '30s," Werner said.

"Their memories were still vivid of the man who made a big impact on their lives. The oldest, who is now 88 years old, played on the greatest Waco High team of all time, in 1927."

Werner has been a sports writer for the Tribune Herald since 1982. His primary responsibility is covering Baylor University and Big 12 athletics, but he also covers high school football.

A Copperas Cove, Texas, native, Werner is a 1979 graduate of Southwest Texas State.

He previously won Best of Cox awards for non-deadline sports writing in 1995 and sports columns in 1996.

In his spare time, he likes to hike and listen to music.

EXCERPT:
"Nearly 58 years have passed since Paul Tyson coached his last game at Waco High. It's been 49 years since he died nearly destitute. But the records of his Waco teams will stand for eternity."

JUDGES' COMMENTS:
"Loaded with interesting facts that Werner lets speak for themselves without bogging down in hyperbole."
