Headline
Writing
Ann
Winterholter / Grand Junction Daily Sentinel
The challenge
in writing a newspaper headline, according to Ann Winterholter,
is to come up with something intelligent and witty and do
it quickly.
"A good headline
baits the reader, makes him or her curious, smile or think," she
said.
"It's like giving
an 80 point bold sample of how tasty the fine print should be."
A Rangely, Colo.,
native and self-described bookworm, Winterholter followed her love
of reading and language to an English writing degree at Taylor University
in Upland, Ind.
While in college,
she was the associate editor of the literary magazine, Parnassus,
and wrote for the school newspaper and TV station.
After graduation,
she joined the Daily
Sentinel in November 1997 as a copy editor.
Winterholter
also writes music reviews, critiquing the Grand Junction Symphony
and the Mesa State College Artists Series.
That activity
allows her to indulge her other love, music. A violinist since the
age of 3, she also plays the piano and has recently taken up the
guitar.
