Business Reporting
Chris Barker / Grand Junction Daily Sentinel

Cox papers are published in some interesting locales, and a business page story about the local economy turning on the deer and elk hunting season is unique to Grand Junction, Colo.

"People around here really are aware of that part of the economy," Chris Barker said. "It's just something we knew people would read."

He joined the Daily Sentinel in March 1997 and has covered the city council, business news, and now state government and politics.

He was born in Lawrence, Kan., eight minutes ahead of his twin sister, Jennifer.

After graduating from Colorado College, Barker planned to continue playing bass guitar in a rock 'n' roll band, but an interest in writing turned him to journalism.

He interned at the Denver Rocky Mountain News and reported for the Aurora Sentinel before moving to Grand Junction.

He shares his home with a cat named Jam.

EXCERPT:
"Three years of warmer than normal hunting seasons and state regulatory changes that limit the number of deer and elk licenses issued has struck a blow to small businesses in Craig and across the Western Slope."

JUDGES' COMMENTS:
"How the forces of nature combine to cripple a key part of the economy. Barker left no key questions unanswered."
